The project “SAFE RAIL – SistemA WIM/WILD in Fibra ottica di nuova gEneRazione per lA sIcurezza deL trasporto ferroviario” (New generation WIM/WILD in optical fiber ecosystem for train transportation) has been funded by European Union, Italy and Campania Region in the context of the POR Campania FESR 2014-2020 – Asse 3 – O.S. 3.1 – Azione 3.1.1 “Avviso Pubblico per il sostegno alle MPMI campane nella realizzazione di progetti di trasferimento tecnologico e industrializzazione”.
The consortium is composed by Intelligentia responsible of the overall software and hardware computational infrastructure, algorithmic solution with AI/ML to identify and predict defects and potential issues, Optosmart srl (Lead partner) that is responsible for the overall system design adopting cutting-edge optical sensors and innovative mouting strategies for their installation on railways, and Cosmind srl responsible for the innovative mechanical design using also 3D printed metal components, and certification of the physical device to install on site.
The main goal is to redesign and deeply innovate a monitoring and diagnostic system for rolling stock in transit during normal railway operation. The solution is totally based on cutting-edge optical fiber technology, coupled with innovative mechanical design, and distributed computing for an IoT ecosystem capable of:
- carry out the dynamic weighing of trains in real time (WIM functionality) in order to control longitudinal and/or transversal imbalances;
- measure the wheel/rail impact force and the detection of defective wheels (WILD – Wheel Impact Load Detection);
- return countless other measurements, including: number of axes, composition, speed, direction of transit, etc.
